Glossary of terms used

There are many terms and abbreviations used within the industry and it is not uncommon for our customers to ask what they all mean. To follow is a brief explanation of the most common terms used:

DNO	Distribution Network Operator	The organisation responsible for operating and maintaining the electrical supply cables across the region. The DNO needs to be notified of any grid-tied generating equipment installations. RED electrical notify them on your behalf.
FIT	Feed In Tariff	Also known as the Clean Energy Cashback Scheme. The scheme under which consumers can obtain payments from their energy supplier for generating some or all of their own electricity.
MCS	Microgeneration Certification Scheme	A scheme operated on behalf of OFGEM to regulate and certify products and installers. Only MCS approved equipment installed by MCS approved installers is eligible for payments under the Clean Energy Cashback Scheme.
PV	Photovoltaic	The technology used to generate electricity from sunlight. This refers to the solar panels themselves.
SSEG	Small Scale Electricity Generator	Anyone who owns a form of generating equipment that is tied to the National Grid.
